Your business might be profitable. It might have a healthy turnover, money in the bank and a nice set of accounts.
But here’s a slightly different question:
Is your business actually making YOU wealthy?
Because they’re not necessarily the same thing.
I meet plenty of business owners who have spent years building successful businesses, but when you look at what those businesses have actually done for them personally, it can be a very different picture.
They’re working hard. They’re carrying all the responsibility. They’re taking all the risk. But are they building personal wealth along the way?
That might mean:
→ Paying yourself properly rather than taking whatever is left
→ Building cash reserves so one bad month doesn’t cause panic
→ Paying into pensions and investments outside the business
→ Reducing personal debt or paying down the mortgage
→ Building a business that has a genuine value without you in it
→ Having a plan for how you’ll eventually take money out of the business tax-efficiently
There’s nothing wrong with reinvesting in your business. In fact, growing businesses often need it. But there should eventually be a point to all that hard work. And that point shouldn’t simply be “the business has more money.”
Your business is an asset. It should be helping you create the life and financial security you actually want.
So here’s a question worth asking yourself:
If I looked back in five years, what would I want this business to have done for me personally?
More savings?
A pension pot?
No mortgage?
Fewer working hours?
A valuable business I could sell?
The freedom to step away altogether?
Once you know the answer, you can start making business decisions that actually move you towards it.
Because building a profitable business is brilliant.
Building a profitable business that creates wealth and freedom for its owner is even better.
