Here’s a slightly uncomfortable question for business owners:
What would happen if you disappeared from your business for a month?
Not forever. No dramatic desert-island scenario required.
You just weren’t available.
Would everything carry on pretty much as normal?
Or would your phone explode by lunchtime on day one?
If every decision needs you, every customer relationship belongs to you, every problem lands on your desk and half the important information lives inside your head… you might have created a successful business.
But you’ve also created yourself a very demanding job. And this isn’t about building a business you can eventually sell. It’s about making your life better now.
Start looking at the things that only you currently do.
❗️ Do they genuinely need your knowledge and experience?
❗️ Or have you simply always done them?
❗️ Could somebody else make that decision if they had clear guidelines?
❗️ Could another member of the team deal with that customer?
❗️ Are your important processes actually documented anywhere?
❗️ Could somebody find the information they needed without ringing you?
None of this means you suddenly need a huge team or a 97 page procedures manual that nobody will ever read. It just means gradually building a business that doesn’t rely on you for absolutely everything.
Because that gives you choices.
✅ You can take a proper holiday
✅ You can have a day off without checking your emails
✅ You can reduce your hours
✅ You can concentrate on the work you’re actually good at
And eventually, if you decide you want to sell the business, you’ve built something somebody else can actually take over.
Pick ONE thing your business currently relies on you to do and work out how you could make it less dependent on you.
One process. One decision. One customer relationship. One recurring task.
Start there.
Because the ultimate sign of a successful business isn’t that it can’t survive without you.
It’s that you’ve built it well enough that it can.
